Group fumes as UNILORIN female lecturer hospitalized over an assault by a student. A female lecturer at the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin, who was identified simply as Mrs. Zakariyyah, has been beaten to a pulp in her office by a 400-level student of the institution.
The lecturer is said to be recuperating in an undisclosed hospital.
The student, identified simply as Captain Walz, reportedly attacked the lecturer in her office, as the victim reportedly sustained severe injuries.
PUNCH Metro learned that the student had sought the help of the lecturer, who was his project’s supervisor because he did not observe the compulsory Students Industrial Work Scheme.
It was gathered that the student allegedly “entered the lecturer’s office and started banging her table, moved closer to her and slapped her.”
“The lecturer tried to escape and he kept pursuing her; she ran into an office, but Captain Walz broke the window and started punching her hard.
“In an attempt to escape, the lecturer fell, sustained a head cut, and was strangled by the student till she fell into a coma,” a source added.
The Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
He said, “This is to confirm that Mrs. Zakariyyah is now relatively stable and recuperating after the ugly incident of Thursday when she was attacked by a 400-level male student.
“A visit by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem, in the company of the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Oladiji; the Director, University Health Services, Dr. Odunola, and a few other staff to the victim and her family, this morning, Saturday, confirmed that.
“The vice-chancellor described the incident as sad and unfortunate, assuring that justice would be done in the matter.
“He ordered proper care of the victim on the bill of the university.
“The vice-chancellor reiterated his commitment to the welfare of all staff and law-abiding students of the institution.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that the student was arrested by the security personnel of the university and handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, a group, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, has condemned in strong terms the action of the student, describing it as irresponsible, barbaric, animalistic, and unpardonable.
In a press statement in Ilorin on Sunday, the National Coordinator of the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, called on the Kwara State Commissioner of Police to ensure early prosecution of the suspect.
Ibrahim noted that education would continue to be in danger if any irresponsible student no matter his or her family background or status was allowed to pounce on a lecturer for whatever reason.
He called on school authorities to intensify its war against cultism and all forms of crimes which usually prompted an “irresponsible reaction of this nature that has brought the suspect into the police net.”
